The movie needs to be advertised before it hits stores on April 28th, so what better place to advertise than a coffee shop that sees million of people across the country everyday. Starbucks is advertising for the new movie Akeelah and the Bee, which is about a spelling bee. If you have been to Starbucks lately you can't help but notice the spelling words all over the store, the special chair that is reserved for the spelling bee champion, and the words written on each cup. What do these three things have in common? Well STARBUCKS of course. God may not have been mention even once in the movie, but God used the movie to make clear to me what thinks about money. I thought critically about the issues that were represented in the movie, and I measured them up with what the bible tells us. I found a way to find truth out of a movie that lacked truth. We used to movie as a starting point for a discussion about the consequences of having money as the idol of our lives. We ended up having a great discussion about how we are to view money as Christian's. So when the movie was over, I brought up my frustrations with the group of people that I watched it with. This idea frustrates me because it completely goes against the bible. Money was the goal, the prize, the entire pinot of living. The movie was based upon money and the things that people do for money. Personally, I felt like the movie was weird and had little point or relevance, but I thought about it anyways. I have began to see a new way to consume media, which involves me actively seeking truth.įor example last night I watched a movie called Fun with Dick and Jane with Jim Carrey. But how often do I really look at the STUFF and the MEDIA for signs of Jesus Christ? I would have to say not quite enough. I can see him when I look with eyes open and alert to what he has given in light of biblical truths. He created the movies, the music, the media that we consume everyday. He created the chair I am sitting in, the computer I am writing on, the ideas in my mind. Is is possible to see God in everything? He did create everything. I have begun to take more responsibility to join conversations, to look with and open mind, and to find biblical truths in all things. But there is more to movies and music than that. I have begun to think about ways to apply the goodness of media to areas of my life.I guess I just never really considered some aspects of mass media as something more than entertainment. Getting the chance to hear other people's insights into areas of life through the ideas of media opens up to deep and insightful conversations. Simply talking with other people about the things we have just experienced is teaching me more than I ever thought. I am joining conversations after I have been involved in any mass media experience. I have managed to learn virtues form movies, music, and arts in general. The benefits I have found when I consider mass media with an open mind are great. And mine were prettier and cost less, even with the marked down eggs now online.Īlso, would anyone be interested in a how-to video? I’m considering doing that, but only if you’d be interested in seeing it.Looking at mass media with the lens of Christian criticism is a principle that I will continue to develop. “I could make these,” I said to my fellow shoppers. Six eggs for twelve dollars!? Are you kidding. I saw said sparkly eggs (keep in mind this was a week before Easter, my computer has been gone a long time people). Two of my fellow gift card holders and I went to Potter Barn to see what we could see. A tree of sparkly Easter eggs dangling from branches and set in a cute pitcher. But there was one thing at the event that I had my eye on. We all got door prizes which were $25 gift cards so we left fat and happy. The Pottery Barn class was fun but mostly just a ploy to shop at their store. This was thrilling to me because on the invite it said that there would be a door prize for the first 50 people AND a chance to win a $500 gift card to Pottery Barn! Needless to say I brought three friends and we gorged on jerk chicken skewers and strawberries. This is the only perk I am seeing in the economy at this point.Īnyway the point is we went looking at model homes and I was given an invite to a Pottery Barn Design event at the builder’s design center. I still cannot believe that we can get a newer, larger house for less each month. It’s not a done deal at this point but we’re making baby steps to getting our own place. It’s no secret we’ve been hunting around for houses lately.
